Help with searching

Firm name Back to top

If you're searching for a firm by name, type it here. If you can't remember the full name, use the asterisk character (*) as a wild card, so '*smith' will find 'Goldsmith', 'Smith' and 'Smithson'. If you're searching for the name of an individual solicitor, please use our solicitor search.

If you're unsure of the firm's exact name, try using an asterisk as a wildcard. For example, typing in *SMITH returns the names GOLDSMITH, SMITH and SMITHSON.

Postcode/location Back to top

If you provide a location, the search will return solicitors nearest to your location first. You can supply partial postcodes; for example, 'SW1' will find 'SW1A', 'SW1B'. Postcode and geographical data is supplied by the Post Office.

If you don't know the postcode, you can type in a name of a town. For example, you can enter 'Redditch' or 'Paris'. Because a town usually contains several postcodes, this search is likely to take longer.

The search recognises most postcodes and many locations. If you can't find what you're looking for straight away, try filling in more or different fields. Postcode data is supplied to us by the Post Office

The search returns up to 50 results, in the order of distance from the centre of the postcode / location you specified.

Country Back to top

If you're searching for solicitor in a foreign country who can practise English and Welsh law, select that country by clicking the down arrow on the right-hand side of the list.

If the country you are searching for is not in the list, it means that no solicitor has told us that they practise in that country.

Areas of law Back to top

To narrow down your search, you can search for firms who have told us that they specialise in a particular area of law. If you're unsure which to choose, see our area of law help. The panel logo logo indicates that a member of a firm has accreditation scheme membership.

This means that a practictioner has gained recognition from the Solicitors Regulation Authority for expertise in a particular field.

For more on specialist solicitors and accreditation schemes, see Solicitors who specialise.

If you're still unsure what category your issue comes under, contact us.

Accreditation scheme membership Back to top

Accreditation scheme membership (indicated by accreditation scheme logo logo) means that a member of a firm has demonstrated to the Solicitors Regulation Authority special competence in a particular area of law. As an alternative to searching on an area of law, you can search for a firm that employs an accreditation scheme member by selecting the accreditation scheme from this list. To select more than one accreditation scheme, hold down the Ctrl key before clicking on a second scheme.

For more on specialist solicitors and accreditation schemes, see Solicitors who specialise.

Language Back to top
If you need a solicitor to speak a particular second language, click on the arrow and select it from the list. If you are happy to communicate with the solicitor in English, you don't need to change anything in this box.

Wheelchair access Back to top
Click on the box to search for firms who have told us that they have wheelchair access.

Training contracts Back to top

The Law Society maintains a register of law firms that are authorised to take on trainees. To search for authorised law firms, please use the training contract check box. Please check directly with the firms listed for possible vacancies.

(Learn more about the training contract.)

Solicitor search Back to top

To find an individual solicitor, use the solicitor search, which gives details of every solicitor currently licensed to practise by the Law Society, including Registered European Lawyers and Registered Foreign Lawyers.

To search for a solicitor you must provide a last name. If you're unsure, use an asterisk as a wildcard. For example, typing in *SMITH returns the names GOLDSMITH, SMITH and SMITHSON.

Organisation search Back to top

The organisation search helps you find solicitors who aren't in private practice - in other words, those based in organisations such as Law Centres, Citizens' Advice Bureaux and in-house legal departments.

Legal help abroad

If you need to find legal help for a problem that has arisen outside England and Wales, or that has a foreign dimension, there are a variety of sources available. Including, find a solicitor, that gives a listing of qualified solicitors in the country on which you need advice. And list of international law firms (PDF, 1.8mb) advertising in the Directory of Solicitors and Barristers.

How solicitors are regulated

Solicitors in England and Wales are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. When choosing a solicitor you can be confident they are professionally qualified and properly regulated.

You have the right to be treated with care and professionalism by your solicitor. A solicitor should act in your best interests and in accordance with the law. You can view the rules and principles of professional conduct for solicitors in the Solicitors' Code of Conduct 2007.

If you feel you have not received a high level of service from your solicitor, find out how to make complaints about solicitors.
